Umpire Pic

The Umpire Ejection Fantasy League has moved to http://umpireejections.closecallsports.com. Please update your bookmarks.

Not only does our new subdomain name seem a little more baseball oriented, the features and accessibility of the Blogger service are better than those of the Livejournal service.

As for the website's content and ejections, the cascreamindude.livejournal.com website will remain operation for archiving purposes. Beginning with tonight's ejection (Doug Eddings (1)), all UEFL posts - Ejections, Odds & Ends, etc. - will be made to the Close Call Sports website. Note that any challenges pending will be resolved at the CCS location.

This should be a much smoother and easier forum for everyone. Over the coming weeks, we plan to transfer this season's ejections to the new umpireejections.closecallsports.com site, while keeping these same posts in existence at the livejournal site, too.

Please join us at our new location, UmpireEjections.closecallsports.com.

Close Call Sports is dedicated to the objective and fair analysis of close or controversial calls by referees and umpires across all sports. Though the UEFL remains active at our new location, we are pleased to announce that we are expanding beyond baseball at our new location, CloseCallSports.com.
20th-Apr-2011 08:44 pm - Ejections: Brian Knight (1)
Umpire Pic
HP Umpire Brian Knight ejected White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski for arguing a strike call in the top of the 6th inning of the White Sox-Rays game. With two outs and one on, Pierzynski hit a 0-1 fastball from Rays pitcher Wade Davis for a groundout. Replays indicate one callable pitch during the at bat, a borderline fastball ruled a strike, which was outside the bounds of the strike zone. Because this one call did not have a realistic effect on the outcome of this at bat, this call is correct under Rule 6.e.iii. At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 4-1. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 4-1.

This is Brian Knight (91)'s first ejection of 2011.
Brian Knight now has 4 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (0 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 4).

MLB Umpire Injured by Foul Ball Awarded $775K in Wilson Suit

A District of Columbia Superior Court jury has ordered the Wilson Sporting Goods Co. to pay $775,000 to a Major League Baseball umpire injured by a foul ball that knocked off his Wilson-made face mask.

Ed Hickox, who has since resumed his duties as an MLB umpire, suffered a concussion and several broken bones after a foul ball struck him in the jaw while he was umpiring a Washington Nationals' game at RFK Stadium on May 14, 2005. The protective face mask Hickox was wearing at the time flipped off of his head upon impact. The mask was given to Hickox for free by a Wilson representative.

Hickox sued Wilson, claiming the company was responsible not only because the mask failed to protect his face as advertised, but also because the company failed to tell Hickox that the company had not tested the mask with the same rigor they used to test hockey face masks, according to boxscorenews.com.

Umpire Pic
Crew Chief Jerry Layne (24) was injured in the Top of the 2nd inning with one on and no outs of the Cubs-Rockies game. Layne was the 1B umpire for the opener of the series when a Carlos Pena line drive struck him in the lower leg. He stayed on the ground for a few minutes while being assisted by Rockies' trainers. Eventually, Layne was able to walk off on his own power, but left the game. The game proceeded with a three man umpiring crew with Bob Davidson taking control of 1st base, manning the bases with Hunter Wendelstedt. Layne was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Jerry Layne had two ejections in 2010 and umpired the 2010 NLDS between the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves. He finished with 3 points in the 2010 UEFL season, he currently has 0 points in the 2011 UEFL season.

Update: Jerry Layne is out for the second game of the series between the Cubs and Rockies. Jerry Meals replaced Layne, and is the HP umpire for the second game.

As one of our UEFL commenters noted, "it's rare you see interference at the major league level... and tonight it was called three times!" Let's review:

1) Vanover (WSH@NYM): With three on and none out in the bottom of the 8th inning of the Nationals-Mets game, Mets batter Josh Thole hit a 0-0 fastball from Nationals pitcher Doug Slaten back up the middle. Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond attempted to field the ball on the third base side of the second base bag, where Mets baserunner Ike Davis was taking his secondary lead. Contact did not appear to have occurred (it doesn't have to), and Davis was ruled out for interference by 2B Umpire Larry Vanover. The Mets ultimately won the contest, 8-4.

2) Davidson (TOR@LAA): With two on and two out in the top of the 13th inning of the Blue Jays-Angels game, Blue Jays batter Edwin Encarnacion hit a 0-1 slider from Angels pitcher Jason Bulger to the area between third base and shortstop. Angels third baseman Alberto Callaspo attempted to field the ball, where Blue Jays baserunner Yunel Escobar was running. Contact did not appear to have occured, and Escobar was ruled out for interference by 3B Umpire Bob Davidson. The Angels ultimately won the contest, 6-5, in 14 innings.

3) Hickox (LAD@SD): With three on and two out in the bottom of the 9th inning of the Dodgers-Padres game, Padres batter Cameron Maybin hit a 2-1 fastball from Dodgers pitcher Jonathan Broxton softly on the ground to the area between third base and shortstop. Dodgers third baseman Casey Blake charged the grounder and collided with Padres baserunner Chase Hedley, who was ruled out for interference by 3B Umpire Ed Hickox to end the game, which the Dodgers won, 4-0. Hickox also served as HP Umpire during the first game of the Dodgers-Padres quasi-double header. Good call?

Tonight's Dodgers-Padres game has been suspended after four rain delays, totaling 3 hours and 37 minutes. The contest, with a first pitch originally scheduled for 7:05pm PT, was finally suspended during the game's fourth rain delay, at 1:41am PT the next day: 6 hours and 36 minutes after its scheduled start. It will be concluded prior to the next scheduled contest between the two teams, today, at 5:35pm PT. The contest began with a delayed first pitch, which occurred at 7:29pm PT. The contest was delayed in the top of the second inning as a powerful cell moved into the area. After 1 hour and 34 minutes, play resumed until another delay was called in the middle of the 6th inning, immediately after the Dodgers had scored to tie the contest at 2-2. The contest is still tied, 2-2, in the top of the 9th, with none out and Dodgers baserunner Matt Kemp on first base. Padres pitcher Heath Bell is of record, and the next Dodgers batter has not yet officially been announced as of the delay and suspension. How do you think 1B Umpire Ed Rapuano fared in his first suspension as a full time Crew Chief?

The Dodgers ultimately won the contest, 4-2, in 11 innings. The final time of game was 4:19 with a 3:36 delay, a total of 7 hours and 55 minutes.

The ball bounced back onto the field of play, as 1B Umpire D.J. Reyburn (70) ruled a home run. After instant replay review, the call stood. Did the ball indeed hit the metal "pipe" out of play or did it hit the top of the wall?

3B Umpire Chris Ward ejected A's Manager Bob Geren and A's first baseman Daric Barton for arguing a safe call in the top of the 7th inning of the Rockies-A's game. With one out and one on, Rockies batter Ian Steward hit a 2-1 fastball from A's pitcher Trevor Cahill to Cahill. Stewart reached on a missed catch error by Barton, though Barton alleged he lost the ball on the transfer. Replays do not conclusively show whether the ball was controlled, the call was inconclusive. At the time of the Geren ejection, the Rockies were leading, 2-0. At the time of the Barton ejection, the Rockies were leading, 3-0. The Rockies ultimately won the contest, 4-1.

These are Chris Ward (##)'s first and second pre-season ejections of 2011.
*Chris Ward was listed as the 3B Umpire, though he was working at 1B during the 7th inning.

These are the 5th and 6th pre-season ejections of 2011.
