Umpire Odds & Ends: Umpire Injury

Crew Chief Jerry Layne (24) was injured in the Top of the 2nd inning with one on and no outs of the Cubs-Rockies game. Layne was the 1B umpire for the opener of the series when a Carlos Pena line drive struck him in the lower leg. He stayed on the ground for a few minutes while being assisted by Rockies' trainers. Eventually, Layne was able to walk off on his own power, but left the game. The game proceeded with a three man umpiring crew with Bob Davidson taking control of 1st base, manning the bases with Hunter Wendelstedt. Layne was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Jerry Layne had two ejections in 2010 and umpired the 2010 NLDS between the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves. He finished with 3 points in the 2010 UEFL season, he currently has 0 points in the 2011 UEFL season.

Update: Jerry Layne is out for the second game of the series between the Cubs and Rockies. Jerry Meals replaced Layne, and is the HP umpire for the second game.
