Ejections: Angel Hernandez (4)
HP Umpire Angel Hernandez ejected Nationals pitcher Odalis Perez for arguing a balk call in the top of the 3rd inning of the Diamondbacks-Nationals game. With two out and one on, Perez was called for a balk while attempting a pickoff at first base, resulting in the advancement of baserunner Chris Burke to second base. Later in the at bat, Diamondbacks center fielder Chris Young hit a line drive single into right center field, allowing Burke to score from second base. Soon after, Perez had some choice words for Hernandez, resulting in his ejection. Replays show that Perez had stepped towards first base, not past the 45 degree angle toward home plate, the balk call was incorrect. After the game, Perez reportedly called Hernandez "stupid, an idiot." At the time of the ejection, the Diamondbacks were leading, 1-0. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 2-0.

*** On further review of this ejection, Hernandez called two separate balks on Perez during the 3rd inning, the second of which occured with Young on base (the first, incorrectly called balk occured with Burke on first base). This second called balk was the correct call as Perez stepped towards home plate, sufficiently and noticeably past the 45 degree angle from the mound to the 45 foot mark along the first base line. Therefore, since Perez was ejected for arguing the second balk call, Hernandez will be credited with correctly calling the balk. As a result, the ejection of Perez is the outcome of a correct call, and Hernandez will receive credit for an ejection due to the argument of a correctly ruled call by the ejectee (+2 points if you are using The Left Field Corner MLB Umpire Ejection Fantasy League scoring). ***

This is Angel Hernandez (55)'s fourth ejection of 2008.

This is the 117th ejection of 2008.
This is the 53rd player ejection of 2008.
This is the Nationals' second team ejection of 2008 (C Jesus Flores on 5/17/08 by Tim McClelland)

This was 100% a no step balk. The rule states that the pitcher must step directly toward the base before throwing. Perez's foot was moving in the direction of home plate when he planted it on the ground. Good call Angel.
