HP Umpire Eric Cooper ejected Padres catcher Nick Hundley and Manager Bud Black in the bottom of the 6th inning of the Padres-Diamondbacks game for arguing a safe call. With one out and three on, Diamondbacks second baseman Augie Ojeda grounded a 1-2 pitch to Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez threw home to Hundley, who in turn threw back to Gonzalez to record the out at first. Cooper judged that Hundley was not touching home plate when he caught the ball. According to 1B Umpire crew chief Mike Reilly, "he caught the ball and he was not in contact with home plate." Replays indicate the throw was slightly high, and Hundley left home plate to catch the ball, but did not return, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Diamondbacks were leading, 7-1. The Padres ultimately won the contest in 10 innings, 9-7.

These are Eric Cooper (56)'s second and third ejections of 2009.

These are the 43th and 44th ejections of 2009.
This is the 27th Manager ejection of 2009.
This is the 16th Player ejection of 2009.
Hundley was 0-0 in the contest prior to his ejection.

29th-May-2009 06:27 pm (UTC) - Cooper's call at the plate
As an umpire of 24 years, I would love to say that Cooper was right, but after seeing the real stop action replay on television, not just the poor quality mlb.com video, which leaves out the important part, I have to say that Hundley (while he is still one of the biggest jerks in all of baseball) was on the plate when the ball hit his glove. Watch the real replay instead of the mlb.com video, and you will see that Cooper kicked the call.
