Worst Umpire of the Year: Bill Hohn (29)
Bill Hohn is the Umpire Fantasy League's 2009 worst umpire of the year. In his 21st Major League Baseball umpiring season, Hohn finished the 2009 season with a league-high nine ejections, up one from last season, but only received a 12.5% accuracy score, down considerably from his 50% mark last year. Hohn was selected worst umpire because of his very short fuse and confrontational attitude, not becoming of the professional umpire. Hohn officiated three games in which he doled multiple ejections. Notably, Hohn ejected three Atlanta Braves over one play, on June 21, 2009. Ejected were Braves pitcher Eric O'Flaherty, perennial ejectee Manager Bobby Cox, and the seldom ejected 3B Chipper Jones, for arguing Balls/Strikes. The on-field call of Ball was incorrect. Hohn also ejected Angels Manager Mike Scioscia for arguing Throwing At on May 6, and Brewers Batting and Bench Coaches Dave Svuem and Willie Randolph for arguing Balls/Strikes - check swing calls - on two separate occasions. At issue during the Brewers incidents was Hohn's initial refusal to grant an appeal to his base umpires regarding the check swing, similar to the incident involving Hohn at Home Plate during last year's Rangers-Angels contest.
