Noteworthy Umpire of the Year: Angel Hernandez (55)

Angel Hernandez is the Umpire Fantasy League's 2010 Noteworthy Umpire of the Year. In his 20th Major League Baseball umpiring season, was selected as the starting 2B Umpire for the ALCS between the Yankees and Rangers, his seventh CS and 12th postseason.* Hernandez finished the 2010 season with six ejections and a 100% accuracy rating (6/6). Hernandez notably ejected Braves pitcher Jonny Venters and Manager Bobby Cox on July 17 during the Brewers-Braves game after Venters hit Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder square in the back after warnings had been issued. Hernandez is pictured, above, restraining and calming the angry Fielder. Hernandez was also part of the Umpire Odds & Ends: Morgan Out at Home play, in which 3B Umpire Hernandez saw Nationals center fielder Nyjer Morgan be physically assisted to home plate by Nationals catcher Ivan Rodriguez, correctly ruling Morgan out under MLB Rule 7.09(g)--9 [Elastic Clause]. Hernandez had five ejections in 2009.

*Hernandez worked one game of the 2008 ALCS after Derryl Cousins was injured in Tampa Bay. This is considered a postseason appearance under UEFL Rule 4.c.ii.b.

Angel Hernandez (55) now has 29 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League.
Two Umpires have been awarded Noteworthy Umpire this year under UEFL Rule 4.e.ii.

The next postseason award, Umpire of the Year, will be released overnight.

Lets not forget that Angel had the call of the postseason on the play at first in Game 3 of the ALCS. Godd positioning, patience, and great mechanic. Plus a good balk call and good plate game in Game 4 of that series.

LEts also not forget that he basically dealt with Cowboy Joe West's run-ins all year and maintained calm in that Buerhle game when it looked like the White Sox were going to swarm Joe West.

Also, his balk call on Buerhle was correct in the next game that crew worked with Buehrle. It took guts to call another balk on Buerhle but Angel did it emphatically and got it right.

Look for Angel to get a cc nod this year if not when the next spot opens up (Cousins).

I hope you Angel haters out there take note that in 20 years in MLB, he has worked the post season 12 times. I am not sure if there is someone with a comparable record.
