Noteworthy Umpire of the Year: Angel Hernandez (55)
Angel Hernandez is the Umpire Fantasy League's 2010 Noteworthy Umpire of the Year. In his 20th Major League Baseball umpiring season, was selected as the starting 2B Umpire for the ALCS between the Yankees and Rangers, his seventh CS and 12th postseason.* Hernandez finished the 2010 season with six ejections and a 100% accuracy rating (6/6). Hernandez notably ejected Braves pitcher Jonny Venters and Manager Bobby Cox on July 17 during the Brewers-Braves game
after Venters hit Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder square in the back after warnings had been issued. Hernandez is pictured, above, restraining and calming the angry Fielder. Hernandez was also part of the Umpire Odds & Ends: Morgan Out at Home
play, in which 3B Umpire Hernandez saw Nationals center fielder Nyjer Morgan be physically assisted to home plate by Nationals catcher Ivan Rodriguez, correctly ruling Morgan out under MLB Rule 7.09(g)--9 [Elastic Clause]. Hernandez had five ejections in 2009.*Hernandez worked one game of the 2008 ALCS after Derryl Cousins was injured in Tampa Bay. This is considered a postseason appearance under UEFL Rule 4.c.ii.b.
Angel Hernandez (55) now has 29 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League.
Two Umpires have been awarded Noteworthy Umpire this year under UEFL Rule 4.e.ii.
The next postseason award, Umpire of the Year, will be released overnight.
