3B Umpire Ed Montague ejected Dodgers Third Base Coach Larry Bowa for arguing after being told to stay in the coach's box in the bottom of the 6th inning of the Giants-Dodgers game. One point of emphasis for umpires this year is bench/field decorum, which includes the enforcement of the coaching box. Sparking the argument, Bowa was far outside of the third base box, about 45 feet between third base and home plate. In reference to the ensuing altercation between Montague and Bowa, Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully reported, "that vein in Bowa's neck could have held up a screen at the Colosium." At the time of the ejection, the score was tied, 0-0. The Dodgers ultimately won the contest, 3-2.
As a result of the ejection, Bowa was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount by the commissioner's office a day after the game for "inappropriate and aggressive conduct," including making contact with Montague several times.
This is Ed Montague (11)'s first ejection of 2008.
