Worst Umpire of the Year: Bill Hohn (29)
Bill Hohn is the Umpire Fantasy League's 2008 worst umpire of the year. In his 20th Major League Baseball umpiring season, Hohn finished the 2008 season with a league-high eight ejections, but only received a 50% accuracy score. Hohn was selected worst umpire because of his very short fuse and confrontational attitude, not becoming of the professional umpire. Notably, Hohn's worst performance this year occurred August 31, 2008, during the Rangers @ Angels game. Hohn ejected three participants
: Angels Manager, Mike Scioscia, Rangers Manager Ron Washington, and Rangers catcher Gerald Laird, all for arguing balls/strikes. The two Managers were ejected quickly after questioning Hohn's interpretation of a swing versus check swing, as HP Umpire Hohn, at several times throughout the game, refused to give the check swing appeal to 3B Umpire Dale Scott or 1B Umpire Alfonso Marquez.
'In discussing the three ejections, Physioc likened Bill Hohn's very quick hook to "a shootout at the OK Corral, taking out your opponents... He seems to have a bone to pick; any time a manager or catcher wants an appeal, he says, 'no. I called it a strike.'" Added analyst Rex Hudler, "Wild Bill Hohn... has a very short fuse."'
'Said Rangers Manager Washington after the game, "[Hohn] had eject-i-tis" today.'
